About

Welcome to Golden Wave Movement Blog

The Golden Wave Movement is a made up of engaged individuals who have serious concerns about the increasing challenges retirees surviving on modest pension incomes face nowadays.  While our main purpose is to raise awareness of the financial, social and health challenges faced by an increasing number of seniors surviving on modest incomes. We also intend to raise awareness regarding challenges related to their physical, emotional and psychological well-being. We believe that all levels of government need to be involved in reviewing the shortcomings of government and private pension plans as all levels of government have something to contribute. Our governments should put more effort into protecting the existing revenues of seniors and ensure various social services remain in place for the elderly. Our governments should also focus more on sustainable solutions to address health issues that retirees confront during this phase of life. These health challenges will increase as this vulnerable segment of our population increases. We hope our viewers will become more engaged and help instigate political and social changes to improve the lives of this rapidly expanding group of citizens.

While the seniors population is quickly expanding due to increased life expectancy and baby boomers hitting their senior years, our elected officials are not taking this dramatic shift in demographics seriously enough to properly consider how it  will impact the financial and social needs of this vulnerable group.  In particular, there is a dire need for pension reform in this country, especially in this continuing uncertain economic climate. More consideration should be given to seniors in the lower income bracket who never earned the kind of income that would have allowed them to create a reasonable nest-egg for their retirement.

Social and health challenges facing retirees have mainly to do with becoming socially disconnected after leaving the workforce. The workforce is where they had established long standing relationships with co-workers. Moving abruptly from fulltime work to no work can have a negative impact on the life of a retiree. Unless retirees find ways to remain physically and mentally active in what is commonly referred  ‘golden years’ many will not enjoy a satisfying and enriching experience during this period of their life.

Considering that this demographic will expand for years to come we must keep in mind that many in this demographic have to survive on a reduced income. Many in this group are vulnerable if they develop a serious health issues. We have to be more resourceful in finding ways for our older citizens to live in dignity. The challenges facing many retirees surviving on modest incomes should be a lesson that proper planning must be done well in advance of retirement.

We urge you to share our site with friends and neighbours and encourage them to add comments to any of posts and articles we publish.  Come back and visit us often to check out what seniors and those advocating for seniors rights have to say about how the financial, health and social well-being of seniors can be improved and protected.
